Commercial Freezer Repairs Cape Town

5-Star Reviewed
Home Commercial Freezer Repairs

Commercial Freezer Repairs Cape Town covers frozen storage cabinets: display freezers, upright glass and solid-door units, chest freezers, under-counter frozen drawers and ice cream cabinets.

The recurring theme in freezer cabinet repairs is ice, and ice is always a symptom rather than the fault itself. Repairs are arranged across Milnerton, Parow, Bellville, Maitland and the Northern Suburbs.

Send the cabinet type, the temperature it is holding, and whether you can see ice build-up inside.

Diagnosing a Freezer Cabinet

Two questions separate most freezer faults. Is the cabinet cooling at all, and if it is, is it reaching −18°C?

A cabinet doing nothing points to the electrical side or a total loss of charge. A cabinet that is clearly cold but stuck around −10°C or −12°C points to capacity: low refrigerant, restricted airflow, a fouled condenser or a compressor no longer pumping properly. The second case is more common and easier to ignore, because the unit feels cold when you open it.

What Goes Wrong

FaultUsual cause
Cabinet not freezing at allElectrical fault, failed compressor, total loss of charge.
Holding −10°C instead of −18°CLow charge, iced evaporator, fouled condenser, worn compressor.
Heavy ice insideDefrost failure or persistent warm air ingress.
Ice around the door or lidFailed gasket, dropped hinge, frame heater fault.
Door will not close properlyIce on the frame, worn hinge, damaged gasket.
Running continuouslyCapacity shortfall from charge, airflow or heat rejection.
Tripping the supplyCompressor drawing excess current, shorted heater or fan.
Water leaking from the baseBlocked or frozen drain, cracked evaporation tray.
Frost-free unit frosting upDefrost heater, timer or termination sensor failure.

The Ice Problem

Every gram of moisture that enters a freezer stays as ice until something removes it. That is what the defrost cycle is for. When defrost fails, ice accumulates on the evaporator, blocks airflow, and the cabinet warms even though the compressor is working harder than ever.

Ice on the door frame, gasket or lid rim is a different story: that is warm humid room air meeting a cold surface, which means the seal is not doing its job. Chipping it off is not a repair; it comes straight back.

Cabinet warming with stock inside? Mark it urgent when you submit the request.

Equipment Covered

Display freezers with glass lids or doors, upright commercial freezers, chest freezers, under-counter frozen storage, ice cream and gelato cabinets, and back-of-house frozen holding units. Where the frozen storage is a room rather than a cabinet, that falls under freezer room work instead.

Before the Technician Arrives

  • Note the temperature the cabinet is holding and what it should be set to.
  • Check whether ice is on the evaporator, the door frame, or both.
  • Look at the condenser and note whether it is visibly dirty.
  • Have the make, model and serial number ready.
  • If temperature is climbing on loaded stock, move the product rather than waiting.

Areas Covered

Freezer cabinet repairs are arranged across Milnerton and the West Coast corridor, Parow, Bellville and the Northern Suburbs, Maitland and the surrounding industrial areas, and retail and food premises throughout the metro. Broader service coverage is on Commercial Refrigeration Cape Town.

Frequently Asked Questions

My commercial freezer is running but not freezing properly. Why?

A freezer that runs continuously without reaching temperature is usually short of refrigerant, moving too little air across an iced evaporator, or rejecting heat through a fouled condenser. A worn compressor produces the same picture.

Why is there thick ice inside my freezer?

Either the defrost cycle has stopped working, or the door is admitting warm humid air. Both put moisture in the cabinet, and at freezing temperatures moisture only goes one way. Clearing the ice without fixing the cause just resets the clock.

Can a chest freezer be repaired commercially?

Yes. Thermostats, lid seals, drain plugs, fans and sealed system faults are all repairable. Chest freezers hold temperature well when loaded, so a fault often shows up gradually rather than suddenly.

How cold should a commercial freezer be?

Frozen storage is generally held at −18°C or colder. A cabinet sitting at −12°C is not adequately freezing product for storage, even though it feels perfectly cold to the hand.

What causes a freezer door to stop sealing?

Gaskets harden and shrink with repeated cold cycling, hinges drop under the weight of a heavy door, and ice building up on the frame stops the door closing fully. Ice on the frame is usually a symptom of the seal already failing.

Is a freezer fault more urgent than a fridge fault?

Generally yes, because frozen stock cannot be recovered once thawed and the value per cubic metre is higher. If the cabinet is loaded and the temperature is climbing, treat it as urgent.

Why does my freezer keep icing up after being defrosted?

Because the moisture source is still there. Recurring ice after a manual defrost points to a failed door seal, a defrost heater that is not working, or a defrost cycle that never terminates properly.
