Walk In Freezer Installation Cape Town

5-Star Reviewed
Home Walk In Freezer Installation

Walk In Freezer Installation Cape Town covers frozen walk-in storage fitted into existing commercial premises: kitchens, butcheries, food retailers, caterers and distribution sites holding product at −18°C or colder.

A walk-in freezer asks more of a building than a walk-in fridge does. The floor build-up, the plant size and the electrical supply are all bigger, and each one can rule a site out before the refrigeration is even discussed. Installations are arranged across Epping, Montague Gardens, Paarden Eiland, Brackenfell and Airport Industria.

Send your available floor area, ceiling height and whether the site has three-phase power. Those three answer most of the feasibility question.

Three Things That Decide Feasibility

Floor build-up and height

Insulated floor panels are standard on walk-in freezers, and they raise the finished floor. That eats into ceiling height, changes the door threshold and usually means a ramp for trolleys and pallet movement. On sites with restricted head height it is the constraint that bites first.

Electrical supply

Low-temperature plant draws more than chilled plant of a similar footprint. Published sizing shows freezer rooms moving to 380V three-phase at around 4HP, roughly the 3.5m square mark. If the site only has single-phase, that caps the room size or adds a supply upgrade to the project.

Plant position and noise

Freezer plant runs longer and harder. It needs genuinely free airflow, service access, and somewhere its noise is acceptable. On mixed-use buildings and sites near dining areas or neighbours, position and acoustic treatment need settling early rather than at commissioning.

These are indicative market ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African refrigeration pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not the rate card of any company on this platform, and most exclude VAT.

Compare quotes on what is actually included: the equipment specified, whether installation, electrical connection and commissioning are in the price, and what the warranty covers.

Commissioning and First Load

Commissioning covers pressure testing, evacuation, a weighed refrigerant charge, defrost programming and control setup, followed by an empty pull-down to setpoint. The pull-down is not a formality: it verifies that the plant actually achieves the design temperature under real site conditions, and it is the last point at which a sizing problem can be caught cheaply.

Load the room only once it has held setpoint. Putting warm product in during pull-down extends the process substantially and puts the compressor under a load the sizing did not allow for.

Who Installs Walk-In Freezers

Commercial kitchens and caterers, butcheries and meat processors, frozen food retailers, ice cream producers, and distribution and dispatch operations. Work is concentrated in Epping, Montague Gardens, Paarden Eiland and Airport Industria, with retail and hospitality sites through Brackenfell and the Northern Suburbs. Broader service information sits on Commercial Refrigeration Cape Town.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a walk-in freezer go into an existing kitchen?

Yes, though it demands more from the space than a chilled walk-in. Floor insulation adds height, the plant is larger, and larger units often need three-phase power. Those three points decide most feasibility questions.

Why does the floor need insulating?

At −18°C an uninsulated floor pulls heat from the structure below continuously and can freeze the substrate, leading to heave and cracking. Insulated floor panels prevent that, and they raise the finished floor level, which affects door thresholds and trolley access.

Do I need a ramp?

Usually, once an insulated floor panel is fitted. The finished floor sits above the surrounding level, so a ramp or threshold is needed for trolleys and pallet trucks. It is easy to forget at quoting stage and awkward to add afterwards.

Will a walk-in freezer work on single-phase power?

Smaller units can. Published plant sizing moves to 380V three-phase at around 4HP, which corresponds to rooms of roughly 3.5m square and above. Confirm your supply before committing to a size.

How noisy is the plant?

Low-temperature plant runs longer and works harder than chilled plant, so noise is worth planning for on sites near residential neighbours or dining areas. Remote plant positioning and acoustic treatment are the usual answers.

How long before we can load stock?

The room is normally pulled down empty first, and reaching −18°C from ambient takes considerably longer than a chilled room. Loading warm product during pull-down extends it and loads plant that was not sized for the job.

Can an existing walk-in fridge be converted to a freezer?

It is rarely a straight plant swap. Panel thickness, floor insulation, vapour barrier integrity and door heating all have to be assessed, and the total cost of a marginal conversion often approaches a purpose-built room.
