Insulation thickness
Freezer rooms commonly use 100mm to 150mm panels against the 75mm to 100mm typical of chilled rooms. The temperature difference across the wall roughly doubles, and so does the heat flowing through it.
Vapour barrier
Warm outside air carries moisture, and at −18°C that moisture wants to migrate into the panel and freeze there. Once insulation is waterlogged and frozen it never recovers. Joint sealing and vapour barrier detailing are the difference between a room that performs in year ten and one that does not.
Floor construction
An uninsulated freezer floor draws heat from the ground continuously and can eventually freeze the substrate beneath it, causing heave and cracking. Insulated floor panels, and on larger installations underfloor heating or a ventilated void, prevent that.
Defrost
Below zero, any moisture entering the room ends up as ice on the evaporator. Freezer plant therefore needs an active defrost cycle, usually electric, correctly timed and correctly terminated. Defrost is the most common source of trouble on freezer rooms and the part most worth getting right at specification.
Doors
Heated frames stop the door freezing shut. Heated vision panels stop them icing over. Both are standard on properly specified freezer rooms and both get value-engineered out of cheap quotes.
Plant Selection
Low-temperature plant works across a much wider pressure range than chilled plant, which makes compressor selection, oil management and defrost control more demanding. Can an existing cold room be converted to a freezer room?
